Although the terms busbar support and busbar clamp are sometimes used interchangeably, they serve different functions within a busbar system.
A busbar support is primarily designed to provide mechanical support and electrical insulation for busbar conductors. Its main role is to maintain the correct positioning and spacing of the conductors, while helping the assembly withstand the electromechanical forces generated during a short-circuit fault.
Some busbar supports consist of two insulating sections that fit together above and below the conductor, effectively clamping the busbar in place. These are often referred to as comb supports or clamping supports, which is one reason why the terms can sometimes be confused.
A busbar clamp, on the other hand, is typically used to create an electrical connection to a busbar without the need to drill or punch a hole in the conductor. The clamp applies pressure between the main busbar and a connecting cable lug, flexible conductor, or tap-off connection, creating a secure electrical and mechanical joint.
In most cases, a busbar clamp is a metallic component used for electrical connection, whereas a busbar support is an insulating component used for support, spacing, and fault-force resistance.
